Acting is about getting out of your own way

Welcome to my first blog entry on our new site.

Acting is my absolute passion. Of all the interesting hats I wear, Actor is the one that fits the best and fires me the most. There’s something about entering other people’s “realities” that makes my own so much more satisfying.

For me, Acting is the greatest job in the world!

The best piece of advice I ever received about it is; “Acting is about getting out of your own way.

Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Well, let me tell you, in Acting ~ as in Life ~ simple is not always easy. And yet this remains the single most helpful tip I can pass on to my students, or anyone interested in pursuing the craft.

Truly great Acting is about immersion in the character. And that requires the Actor making herself or himself vulnerable. That, in turn, requires bravery. Not the sort of “running into a burning building” bravery, to be sure, but certainly the courage to reveal oneself, and not always in the most flattering light.

Put simply, if you’re not prepared to fail and to make a fool of yourself, Acting isn’t the caper for you!

This willingness to “get out of your own way” allows the Actor to most fully commit to the character’s Life. The result is a performance where all trace of the Actor disappears and the audience experiences only the character. And isn’t that what the text or the script deserves?

As for how to achieve that level of artistry in performance, legendary American Actor James Cagney had his own advice; “Hit your mark, look the other guy in the eye, and tell the Truth.”

That is the Actor’s gift.

And that is the Actor’s responsibility.
